Army Contributes Towards Environmental Friendly Initiatives

Srinagar, June 4: Indian Army has played a key role in protecting and restoring our degraded environment besides preventing destruction and unauthorised exploitation of forests, wildlife and other natural resources including herbs and minerals, a defence official in a statement issuied here said.
The pristine beauty of Kashmir Valley which sustains the tourism industry needs to be preserved for the future generations as also to sustain livelihood of locals dependent on it. Army has undertaken massive environment friendly projects panning across the Valley, he said.
A significant contribution has been made by Chinar Corps by launching afforestation drives, cleanliness drives, Water Harvesting projects and awareness campaigns in various parts of Valley with an aim to earnestly contribute towards World Environment Day on 05th June 2016, he said.
The aim of this initiative was to raise the awareness level of locals and tourists about the importance of conservation of environment and to this effect, a tree plantation drive, awareness campaign through posters, signs and pamphlets, competitions with environmental themes for children and provision of dustbins to local communities as well as streamlining waste collection along the highways. Over 10,000 saplings of Deodar were planted in the adjoining areas of Shopian and Balapur in collaboration with Forest and Horticulture departments in last two months, he said.
Children of over 16 schools from Pattan and many more from Zangam and Arigam participated in week long cleanliness drive, three reverse Osmosis water filtration plants were installed in three schools of Varnau, Kuligam and Madanpora to provide safe drinking water to the children, hundreds of Solar Lanterns and Water purifiers were distributed in the area of Awantipura to enhance awareness towards clean energy, he said.
This campaign has helped in generating awareness among masses towards environment and channelize energy of youth and children in a constructive activity making them key players in preserving the environmental heritage. In the long run, it will also help the youth in becoming socially responsible and conscious about virtues of preserving the natural environment. It is an initiative to secure Kashmir as a green and clean heaven by encouraging people, through a participative process, to be responsible for conserving and protecting the environment they live in, he said.
This is an endeavour by the Chinar Corps to encourage, inspire and sensitise people to the utmost need to conserve the environment and preservation of the delicate ecological balance and a noble attempt of the Army for the improvement of the ecology in the Valley. Many environment friendly projects have been undertaken by Army which will keep contributing towards the ecology of Valley in future, he said.
