Brother-sister duo drowns in Sopore

Srinagar, May 26 (GNS): A minor girl on Thursday slipped into Jhelum river while her brother who attempted to save her also drowned in Sopore Town of Baramulla district.

According to GNS Correspondent, Falak Jan, 8 daughter of Abdul Majid Sheikh of Sheikh Mohalla, Shahabad , was washing her face near Jamia Masjid Sopore when she slipped and fell into River Jhelum. Seeing her sister drowning, Rashid Ahmad (12) rowed a Shikara to save her drowning sister.

Witnesses told GNS that Rashid tried to catch the hand of her sister but the boat turned turtle as a result he too drowned. Soon after this tragic incident, hundreds of aggrieved people assembled on either side of the river banks while police, Navy and locals started an operation to look for the sibling.

Witnesses said the women were seen wailing on the bank of the river while everyone was in grief and shock. Reports said the bodies of the two were not recovered till late hours. (GNS)
