Burhan was freedom fighter: NC lawmaker

Jammu, A lawmaker of National Conference on Tuesday  describedHizb-ul-Mujahideen commander BurhanWani as a freedom fighter and a martyr.

Participating in a debate in the Legislative Council over Kashmir killings, NC MLC Showkat Ganai said Burhan was a freedom fighter and he attained martyrdom fighting for a cause.

“Kashmiris will continue to pick up guns and sacrifice their life fighting until issue is not resolved,” Ganai said.

On this, PDP lawmaker FirdousTak interrupted him and asked him whether it was his party’s stand.

Referring to Ganai’s words, Tak said, “The statement of the member is very sensitive; this massage would go outside, so he must realize what he is speaking in the House.”

Ganai reacted: “I am fully aware about the place where I made the remarks and I stand by each word I said about BurhanWani.”

Reiterating, he said, “Burhan was a freedom fighter, a martyr and this is the thinking of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, not mine alone.”

He also added that everyone was aware that even Hizb Chief Syed Salahuddin didn’t cross over to Pakistan to contest elections, but for the resolution of long-pending Kashmir dispute.

Interrupting Ganai, BJP’s Ramesh Arora said, “Every member has right to express their views, but there should be some parameters or self-censorship to avoid embarrassing situations.”

As PDP and BJP members continued to interrupt Ganai, he tore off some papers and staged walkout from the House.
