New Delhi, Amid raging debate over Article 35-A, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday met Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday in an attempt to build a consensus against scrapping of the constitutional provision that grants special rights and privileges to state’s “permanent residents.”
A source said Mehbooba met Rajnath at around 5.30 pm and is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister on Friday afternoon.
Senior minister in the J&K government Naeem Akhter said the purpose of the Chief Minister’s visit was to apprise the Prime Minister and other leaders about importance of Article 35-A.
“This is an important issue for all of us,” said Akhter, while confirming that the Chief Minister will meet the Prime Minister on Friday.
The Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition seeking scrapping of Article 35A, has referred the matter to a three-judge bench last month and set a six-week deadline for its final disposal.
