Cop, 2 civilians among 4 killed in Anantnag militant attack


Anantnag, Two civilians, a policeman and a suspected militant were killed, while three others sustained critical injuries, when gunmen attacked a police party at Mir Bazar on Srinagar-Jammu highway in this south Kashmir district late Saturday evening, Police said.

The Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid while giving the details of the incident said, “At around 9:30 pm the police party from nearby police post was checking the site of an accident, which had taken place on the highway and people had also assembled at the spot.  Suddenly militants appeared there and opened fire.”

“A police follower, two civilians, and a militant were killed in the firing. A hand grenade was found in the pocket of one of the slain persons, and hence the militant.  Police managed to snatch a pistol from one of the militants,” the Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief told KNS.

He said, “Another militant was injured during the exchange of fire and police are following the blood trail to nab him along with his other associates.”

A Police official said, “Police party was recording the statements of the witnesses, who were present at the accident spot as a Trawler had hit a truck in which the truck driver from Lassipora –Pulwama had died.”

He said two of the slain civilians, one of whom looked like a non-local, killed in the shootout are yet to be identified. “Another one is a militant, his identity is being established,” he added.

The official identified the slain Police follower as Mehmood Ahmad.

He said three injured persons including a Special Police Officer (SPO), Rakeeb Ahmad, and two injured civilians identified as Nawaz Ahmad Mir of Janglat Mandi-Anantnag presently residing at Malpora and Muhamad Hussain Dar were rushed to Srinagar for the specialized treatment.
