Encounter breaks out in Lolab after cordon

Kupwara, April 28: A gunfight broke out between government forces and militants on Thursday evening in Lolab area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

A senior police official told GNS that Indian army’s 28 RR, police and CRPF have cordoned off the Pir Mohalla area of Kantpora in Lolab following a tip off .

As the joint team of forces intensified the combing operations, the militants believed to be hiding in the Pir Mohalla near the Jamia Masjid tried to break the cordon. However, the forces engaged them in a gunfight.

When last reports came, the intermittent exchange of fire was going on in the area.

Meanwhile, locals of the area staged protest demonstrations and clashed with paramilitary CRPF and police. The forces, however, used tear smoke shells to disperse them.  (GNS)
