Former Handwara MLA takes pot shot at police, Sajjad Lone

Says why civilians were killed, what was their fault
Srinagar, April 13: (GNS) Former National Conference MLA Handwara, Chaudary Mohammad Ramzan on Wednesday accused police and local administration of aggravating the situation which according to him led to the death of four civilians.
Talking to reporters, he said that the incident could’ve been averted, provided police had the shown the restraint. Accusing the recently suspended Assistant Sub-inspector of his direct involvement in the killings, Ramzan said that, “I have learnt from my sources that ASI Rafiq Ahmad opened fire from the rifle he snatched from his fellow constable during which Nayeem Ahmad died on spot.”
“Eyewitnesses to the incident say that despite repeated pleas from Nayeem’s uncle Mohammad Ali not to open fire, he (Rafiq) didn’t budge and went on to kill the youths,” he added.
According to the ex-legislator, the administration has taken a back-seat and has failed to contain the situation in the area. “They are in no mood to pacify or control the situation,” he said, adding that even during the funeral of the youth, the forces action created a stampede like situation in the local graveyard.
Urging the administration of showing restraint, he said: “Gone are the days when the youth would fear bullets. Today’s youth have abandoned the old thinking. They (youth) are very brave.”
He also took a dig at his political rival and incumbent MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone, accusing him of deserting the constituency. “MLA is nowhere on the ground,” he said.
When asked to comment over the recently floated video of the girl, who claimed that youth harassed her, Chaudary said that “there is no need to debate it for now, let the magisterial inquiry begin and we’ll get to know about the truth. The point of contention at the moment is how come were these civilians killed, what was their fault?”
Meanwhile, the locals blamed police for “mishandling the situation” which has so far claimed four lives alongside the youth who got killed in Drugmulla, Kupwara on Wednesday afternoon.
Pertinent to mention that the family of the deceased youth Mohammad Iqbal Pir while talking to media have also alleged the ASI Rafiq Ahmad of opening the fire on the protestors. (GNS)
