Srinagar, June 3: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani, who was conferred doctorate by Mirpur University recently, on Friday called for complete boycott of the upcoming by-polls to Anantnag constituency in south Kashmir.
The octogenarian leader also hinted at a joint agitation programme by the pro-freedom leadership against the establishment of Sainik colonies, separate townships for Pandits and the new industrial policy.
“We have a set policy regarding the every type of election drama held in Jammu & Kashmir that instead of a democratic practice, the elections in Kashmir in the presence of 10 lakh heavily armed Indian forces are just military exercises and India uses it as an argument in the international forums to justify its forced occupation here and portrays it as referendum of the Kashmiri people in its favor,” Geelani said in a statement.
He also challenged Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to release him from house detention and let him meet people “freely” for five days in Islamabad.
“…then everybody will come to know the actual percentage of people’s participation in this military exercise.”
“We should also be given a chance to present our mandate before the public and only then this election will be called as a democratic practice otherwise it is just a joke which has no moral or constitutional status,” he said.
Addressing the people of the area, Geelani said that every household in Kashmir has faced the oppression in one way or the other and the people of this land have sacrificed their loved ones in this freedom struggle.
“Now is the time to show respect and protect these sacrifices and the few people who vote in these election dramas are not only committing an act of treason but their actions also lengthen our journey to freedom and acts as oxygen for the Indian forced occupation in Kashmir.”
He said that the people who ask for votes in the name of Power, Roads and Water or who vote these people is their stupidity because every government is duty bound to make these things available to the people and against this they collect taxes from the public.
“It is not any favour from the government to the people but it is the hard earned money of the people which is spent on their welfare.”
