Girl sets herself on fire after alleged harassment by cop


Srinagar, April 8: A 22-year-old girl died after she set herself on fire in Tangmarg area of north-Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The victim has allegedly taken this extreme step after being subjected to repetitive harassment and molestation by a police constable employed in Auxiliary Police Wing of State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).  

According to the family, the accused Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh, father of one, working in SDRF police wing vide belt no. 1297 harassed and molested the girl on several occasions.

Father of girl Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Khan said, “The cop was harassing her and despite approaching his family he didn’t stop. We initially had approached the family of the cop to complain about the untoward behavior but despite that Manzoor didn’t stop. The cause of conflict is only that he was repeatedly harassing my daughter, he said.”

Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Khan also alleged the father of the cop of beating him up when he brought the matter in his notice.  “I approached his father but instead of listening, he beat me, he said while adding that, we subsequently approached police but nothing substantial was done in this regard.”

Meanwhile, police have arrested the accused and a case has been registered in this regard.

A senior police official while confirming the development said an FIR has been registered while the culprit is being questioned regarding the happenings which led to the appalling incident.
