Srinagar, The J&K government has not extended the ban on social networking sites, a top officer said on Friday.
“It (ban) has not been extended,” Principal Secretary, Home, R K Goyal told KNS this evening.
The Home department had imposed the ban alleging that these social networking sites were being “misused by anti-national and anti-social elements to create law and order disturbances” in Kashmir.
The ban had however evoked widespread criticism from global institutions including the United Nations.
On May 11, UN experts had urged the Government of India to withdraw the ban on internet services in J&K and reinstate freedom of speech.
“The scope of these restrictions has a significantly disproportionate impact on the fundamental rights of everyone in Kashmir, undermining the government’s stated aim of preventing dissemination of information that could lead to violence,” the experts had said.
