Kashmir shuts on resistance camp’s call


Srinagar, Valley observed a complete shutdown on Friday on the call of joint resistance leadership while clashes broke out in old Srinagar and Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Reports said all shops and other commercial establishments remained closed for the day while public transport was largely off the roads. In Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, all shops were closed while thin transport movement was noticed.

Reports from various district headquarters of Kashmir said a complete shutdown was observed there while traffic movement remained thin to very thin. Reports said soon after culmination of Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in old Srinagar, a group of youth resorted to stone-pelting on forces. The forces, however, chased the youth who later dispersed.

Reports from Sopore said soon after Friday prayers, youth assembled near Jamia Masjid area and started shouting pro-freedom slogans. Some youth hurled stones at forces deployed at main chowk and main bazaar areas while the forces, in turn, used tear smoke shells to disperse them, leading to clashes. The situation remained tense for several hours, reports said.
