Killings of suspected militants evoke shutdown, protests
Srinagar, May 24 (GNS): Following the killings of two suspected militants of Jaish-e-Muhammad, a spontaneous shutdown to mourn these deaths was observed in several areas of City on Tuesday amidst clashes and protests.
According to GNS correspondent, the shutdown was observed against the killings at Sarai Bala and in this regard all the shops and commercial establishments remained closed at Hari Singh High Street, Maharaja Bazar, Amira Kadal and Sarai Bala.
As per witnesses, scores of people today took to streets at Sarai Bala and Maharaja Bazar and staged protests against the killings. The songs eulogizing the militants were also played on the loudspeakers of the local mosques. The witnesses told GNS that the protesters also pelted stones on police personnel after which the forces lobbed teargas shells.
The clashes which ensued following police action continued intermittently for an hour but later the situation eased in the area. Reports informed GNS that locals of the Maharaja Bazar and Sarai Bala also offered absentia funeral for the slain militants. The reports said two youths were detained during clashes in the area. (GNS)
