Sopore, April 8: Residents of majority of areas in Sopore in Baramulla district today alleged that they are being forced to drink contaminated water by PHE Department.

The locals of Jamia Qadeem, Chankhan, Seer Jagir, Naseem Bagh of Sopore Tehsil complained about acute shortage of safe drinking water. “We are being forced to drink contaminated water from river Jehlum,” Abdul Sajad, a resident told news agency GNS.

The people of the town alleged that they are left with no option but to consume dirty contaminated water as not only small insects and dirt particles were seen in the water coming to the houses but today they were shocked when baby pads too were seen.

“The PHE Department is playing with the life of people,” the residents said. They said they have approached concerned authorities several times “but every time we have been given false hopes and the water that is available contains harmful chemicals including nitrite, fluoride and arsenic”.

“We are forced to consume the infected water as the water purifiers are dysfunctional,” they added.
