Rahmoo inhabitants in awe over frequent appearances of leopard

Srinagar, April 21: (GNS) Residents of several areas in south-Kashmir’s Pulwama district have been spending sleepless nights with a leopard making frequent visits to the human-inhabited areas.

Reports reaching GNS said that the leopard made a fresh appearance in Astanpora hamlet of Rahmoo in the district on Thursday late evening panic sending the whole area in panic. The residents took to indoors soon as the leopard was spotted in the village.

Locals on the occasion alleged that the wildlife authorities of failure as to check the movement of the wild beast in the areas.

“The leopard has made frequent appearances in the areas past few weeks, while it also made several abortive bids on cattle sheds in different places, the locals said while adding that despite informing the concerned authorities on several occasions no significant step has been taken to check the movement of the wild beast.”

“Even after the attack on a local shepherd and killing of eight sheep of one Abdul Kabir Sofi, the authorities are yet to respond” they said.

When contacted DFO Wildlife Department Pulwama, Afshana Dewan told GNS that a wildlife team will be deputed to the affected areas Friday morning to ascertain the ground situation. “We had a team stationed there that was called back today only, she said while adding that the team will visit the area again to lookout for the leopard.” (GNS)
