Tehreek-e-Hurriyat district Islamabad president arrested: Police


Srinagar, Police on Friday said it arrested Tehreek Hurriyat’s district president, Islamabad, Mir Hafeezullah while he was leading a pro-freedom rally at Aakhoora Akingaam area of Achabal.

After offering the congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid Aakhoora, Mattan, Mir was leading a pro-freedom march when police arrived at the scene.

Eyewitnesses said that police in civvies arrived in a Tavera vehicle and fired a volley of bullets in the air. People mistook them as militants.

“While people approached towards the vehicle, they restored to heavy tear shelling and continued to fire in air. This triggered a panic among people and taking advantage of the frenzy, police handcuffed Mir Hafeezullah.”

Hafeezullah was senior member of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and was heading district Islamabad.

Mir, who had organized hundreds of rallies during the ongoing uprising, was evading arrest for long.

Police had raided his home several times to arrest him but he would manage to slip away.

In one of such raids, his brother was also arrested.

A spokesperson of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat said that Hafeezullah would regularly participate in the pro-freedom rallies but he never provoked people to resort to “unlawful activities”.

Hafeezullah’s arrest triggered protests in the area. However police swung into action and used tear-gas shells forcing the people to retreat.
