Top IS militant’s Bangladeshi British wife claims UK’s racism forced her to join Islamic State

A Bangladeshi British woman who married America’s most senior Islamic State member said she was radicalised by racism in the UK, according to The Times.

Tania Georgelas [formerly known as Tania Joya], 33, said that she suffered bigotry while growing up in Harrow, northwest London, and was driven to the terror group.

John Georgelas, known as Yahya al-Bahrumi, is still in Syria. Tania married John in 2003.

“I faced a lot of racism,” she said. “I was looking for a way to retaliate, and I wanted honour again.”

Tania was one of five children of Bangladeshi-origin parents. British intelligence believes she had fallen under the influence of a group of ultra-conservative Algerian students during her A Levels. She began supporting gender segregation and wearing a full-body veil and said the September 11, 2001, attacks were a turning point for her.

“I saw the towers being crashed into and I went to school the next day,”’ she said while being interviewed by The Atlantic.

“I said to my friend: ‘Oh isn’t it dreadful what happened’ and she looked at me and said: ‘Is it really?’ At that point I became really jihadi hardcore.”

John, now 33, was the youngest child and only son of a former US military doctor. They moved to his home in Texas but John, who is thought to have converted to Islam shortly after 9/11, was jailed for providing IT assistance to jihadist websites. When he was released in 2011, the couple went to Cairo and began discussing going to Syria.

They have four children and Tania said although she felt she “wasn’t ready” for Syria, they travelled there in August 2013. She had hopes of having seven children who would become killers and conquer every continent in the world for the Islamic State group.

“Our dreams were to have land of our own, raise a family and train them to be assassins or whatever, soldiers, and then eventually go join the jihad,” she said. “I’ve had these children for one reason only, and that was so they could serve God as Muslims, as Mujahideen.”

They set up home in an abandoned villa in the town of Azaz but there was no running water and a shortage of food. Tania and the children became ill within days and by September she had convinced  her husband to take them back to Turkey. After navigating through a minefield with their youngest child in a buggy, John gave her several hundred dollars and handed her to a human smuggler.

She made her way back to Texas and divorced him, but still lives with his parents. John remains in Syria where he has become the highest ranking American in the Islamic State group under the name Yahya al-Bahrumi.courtesu Dhakatribune.
