Unfurling tricolor will be NIT’s own decision: Smriti

New Delhi, April 12: Amid raging debate on nationalism and incidents of unrest in university campuses, India’s Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani today said the administration of National Institute of Technology at Srinagar is competent enough to decide whether the tricolour should be unfurled on its premises.

Talking to reporters, Ms Irani said the decision of unfurling the Tricolour on all the campuses was taken by the Vice-Chancellors of the universities and in case of the NIT too, director of the institute was competent to take any decision in this regard.

The Minister’s stance on unfurling national flag at the NIT comes at a time when for the first time non-local students had raised the Tricolour on campus.  The Minister clarified that the central team sent to the NIT Srinagar shall remain there as long as students willing to take exams on schedule are given a chance and those who are demanding postponement also given a fair opportunity.
