Uproar in Assembly over Handwara incident, ration shortage; opposition stages walkout

Srinagar, May 27 (GNS): Opposition National Conference and Congress on Friday created ruckus in both houses of State Legislature over Handwara killings and alleged molestation of a girl and also against ration shortage in the State.

According to GNS correspondent, as soon as the proceedings of Legislative Assembly began at 10 am, the members of NC, Congress and CPI (M) stood from their seats and started sloganeering against PDP-BJP government. The NC and Congress members displayed banners of civilians killed in Handwara forces’ firing last month and demanded adjournment.

The members of the Congress shouted slogans against ration shortage and NFSA implementation. The agitating members attempted to disrupt the question hour but the proceedings continued. As the uproar continued, the protesting members came into well and started sloganeering.

The NC members raised slogans including ‘Handwara ki beti ko insaaf do insaaf do, Handwara kay Qaatilo ko paish karo paish karo’ whereas the Congress legislators were shouting ‘Bhashan nahi ration chahiye’. The members of the opposition also displayed newspapers of the day when Handwara killings occurred.

After protesting and creating ruckus, the opposition members staged a walkout at around 10:55 am even as Speaker Kavindra Gupta said the probe report of Handwara incident will come after 2 days.

In Legislative Council, similar scenes were witnessed soon after the proceedings of the House started its proceedings at 11 am. The members of NC and Congress got up from their benches and raised slogans against inaction in Handwara incident and ration shortage.

The opposition members demanded a discussion over these issues but the House Chairman urged them to sit down and let House proceedings continue without any disruption. The members however continued their protest and tried to storm the podium of the Chairman. Amidst uproar and spar between the members of ruling party and opposition parties, the NC and Congress members finally staged a walkout at 11:55 am.(GNS)
