BHOPAL: Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Chaudhary Munawwar Saleem said on Saturday that he would commit suicide with his family if investigative agencies detect even an iota of evidence indicating his involvement in the espionage ring run by a Pakistani high commission official+ , which was busted by Delhi crime branch earlier this week.

Saleem’s PA – Farhat, was arrested+ by Delhi Crime Branch on Saturday following his links with Pakistan high commission official Mehmood Akhtar who was arrested along with two Indians identified as Maulana Ramzan and Subhash Jangir at the Delhi Zoo while they were exchanging sensitive defence documents. It was discovered they were running a spy ring for Pakistan’s spy agency ISI. Farhat has allegedly told interrogators that he was paid Rs 2 lakh in instalments by Akhtar for sharing classified documents.

Hailing from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, Saleem had emerged as new player in the Madhya Pradesh politics after being nominated to the Rajya Sabha by SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2012 to woo the Muslim vote bank in the Bundelkhand region. He lives in a joint family at Vidisha main market area.

Saleem said that Farhat was appointed as his PA after due verification by three different agencies including the Delhi police.

“My life is an open book. When Farhat approached me a year ago, I had sent communication to Parliament and government for his verification. Though I am not yet sure of his involvement in the spying syndicate, I would like to say that the police and other agencies which gave him a clean chit for appointment should also be held accountable,” he said adding that he would extend all support to the probe agency

“Mera ghar dharamshala ki tarah Delhi may bhi khula rehta hey yeha bhi … berhaal muje afsos hain ki is tarah ka admi meri zindagi may shamil kaise hua,” (My house in Delhi and Vidisha remains open for public. But I regret that a man like him came in my life) – Saleem told TOI on phone during his Vidisha visit.
