Jammu, June 13: A woman and a suspected person were killed in a firing incident at Udhampur district of Jammu in which five other people were injured on Monday. The gunfight took place on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, when a State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) bus was on its way from Kashmir Valley to Jammu and it was stopped for checking at Kud, about 170 kms from here, police said.
“Police and CRPF were frisking all the Jammu-bound vehicles at Kral Nallah area in Kud when they stopped an SRTC bus and during its checking, an unidentified suspected militant opened fire at them this evening,” Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendra Kumar told a news agency.
In the cross-fire, one militant was killed and one AK-47 rifle and one pistol were recovered from him.
He said it seems only one militant was travelling in the bus.
“It was just the random checking of the vehicles when the police and the CRPF team were attacked, while the militant was gunned down, three civilians including two women and a child were injured in the firing,” the DGP said.
He said while it seems that the attack was carried out by one militant, the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a combing operation to ensure that no other suspected militant was involved in the attack.
“The firing has stopped, CRPF and Police is on the spot and we are carrying a combing operation. Investigation is also on to ascertain the identity of the slain militant,” the state police chief said.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu, Danish Rana said that one militant has been eliminated even though the search operation is on.
Meanwhile, sources said that in the firing incident three civilians — two women and a child — were injured and were immediately hospitalized. However, a woman among two injured was declared brought dead by the doctors who treated upon her.
The attack comes nearly a year after militants ambushed a Border Security Force convoy in Udhampur, killing two personnel and injuring a dozen troopers.
On Sunday, four policemen were injured in a militant attack in south Kashmir’s Qazigund. At least five attacks were carried out by militants in the past two weeks in Kashmir valley, inflicting casualties on security forces.
